North Carolina’s Kersey Valley Spookywoods haunted attraction is gearing up for its 33rd season of scares. Last year, the company came under fire for the content of its billboard advertisement and was asked to remove the billboards due to what some found to be disturbing imagery. However, it turned out that the old saying, There’s no such thing as bad publicity, is true. Ticket sales skyrocketed after the billboard outcry was picked up by local news stations, and the company even enjoyed national coverage of the story. Ticket sales broke records, making last year the highest grossing in Spookywoods’ history.
In response to the controversy, Spookywoods is refusing to rein in its brand-defining, high-quality horror effects and imagery. For this year’s haunt, its team of artists has crafted even more horrifying characters and scenes, which the company intends to improve and intensify for years to come.
